Why We Like The Outdoor Research Helium Bivy

The Outdoor Research Helium Bivy is ideal for moving fast through alpine terrain and wilderness expanses without excess weight slowing us down. Don't let its minimalist design fool you into thinking it's lacking weatherproof performance or functional features. The Helium Bivy offers total waterproofing and maximum breathability with its Pertex Shield Diamond Fuse 2.5-layer membrane, TPU floor lamination, and fully taped construction. We stay pleasantly dry when we're camping out in widely variable conditions, all without soaking in a steam room of built-up perspiration during humid summer months.

The Helium features a clamshell design that promotes a restful night's sleep with a Delrin Single-Pole system acting as a stabilizing structure for the bivy itself. The hood unzips during pleasant weather for extra ventilation and impressive stargazing potential. No-See-Um mesh lining keeps biting insects from eating you alive when you're sleeping with the hood unzipped. Other key features include dedicated straps for attaching your sleeping pad, an internal mesh pocket, and stake-down points for securing this bivy in nasty weather.

Here's what customers have to say

This bivy shelter received mixed reviews. Many users found it to be a lightweight and minimalist option, with features like the mosquito netting and overhead space appreciated. However, some reported issues with waterproofing, with a few experiencing water penetration that could have been problematic. There were also complaints about the mosquito netting design being difficult to use. Overall, the bivy seems suitable for fair weather use, but may not provide adequate protection in more extreme conditions. Some users made modifications to improve its performance.

It's definitely small but worth the weight savings over the 2 person tent I was using previously. A little condensation accumulated overnight despite only the mesh being used.

I keep one in every vehicle

I have a few of these boys although not as rugged as the alpine which I carry with me in the back country, it is really light and packs down easy for assurance when you might need it. Part of my 10 essentials for a day hike or to keep in my vehicle for backup.

this bivy does not has only support pole! the bivy collapses around you. Overall I should have done more research instead of relying on OR's reputation for producing quality well engineered equipment. This one is headed to goodwill.

Solid Bivy

The Bivy delivers in all advertised points. It’s light and durable and the screen is nice when you want some air but not at the expense of bug bites. I think there could be some tweaking in the bivy’s screen to make it more stable and rigid. Love the coyote color. Hope they continue to make products with this color.

Not bad for the price. would like to see it come with 2 side stakes to make it more stable and secured. but it does its job.

exactly what is advertised

I hate bivy bags but this is about as good as they get (ESPECIALLY for the price). I really like the integration of the bug netting.
