Versatile Deviator Mitten balances breathability and warmth for active cold-weather missions

What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:

"I reach for the Deviator Mitten when I’m skinning uphill or trail running in frigid conditions. It’s breathable enough that my hands don’t overheat, but still insulates against the chill with its hybrid design. The wind-resistant outer and mapped insulation really shine when temps drop but you’re still moving fast."

When we’re moving hard in cold conditions—be it a frosty pre-dawn trail run or a steep skintrack in the backcountry—we need hand protection that keeps up without overheating. That’s exactly where the Outdoor Research Deviator Mitten excels. Blending wind-resistant protection with mapped insulation and breathable stretch panels, this mitten offers just the right mix of warmth and ventilation for high-output winter adventures.

Its hybrid construction combines VerticalX™ Octa insulation on the back of the hand with breathable softshell across the palm and sides, giving us warmth where we need it and breathability where we don’t. The result is a mitten that punches above its weight, offering excellent dexterity, moisture control, and packability. From alpine ascents to fast-paced winter hikes, we stash these in our pack every time.

Workable mitt, color not as displayed

I bought these to replace a truly great OR product that is no longer made but had finally worn out (the Shuck Mitts lasted 5 years of running and nordic skiing). These are heavier and have a narrower cuff, making them less versatile and more difficult to layer. The real downer is that the Harbor colorway appears blue on the OR website and is dark blue-green in real life. I expect greater accuracy and am disappointed.

Great activewear

Great activewear. These are comfortably thin and breathable for active sports, e.g., ascent on splitboard, but still warm and protective in below freezing conditions. The reinforcements are well-placed for trekking pole straps. Reflective accents add visibility in low light.

Good running mitts

These are good for cold weather running. Very light & packable. However, the wrist is fairly snug and doesn't stretch, I find them a pain to put on with cold or damp hands.

Great running mitt

I love these for running. They are windproof and provide a little warmth. the wrist is tighter than I would like; I really need to pull the pull-on loop to get them on.

Great light mitts

The gloves do a great job lightly insulating, they aren't waterproof but still do a decent job keeping your hands dry. I've hiked with them, they make good driving mitts too. They are pretty windproof too which makes them the most useful in colder windy weather. My only complaint is if you're wearing a watch or some other form of wrist accessory, the wrist parts of the glove don't do a great job accommodating for that. Other than that, great mitts.

Light and warm enough

They are good for hiking, running and nordic skiing ... not too warm and breathable enough for those activities . If you prefer to wear mittens rather than gloves it's perfect !!

Great cardio mitts

I love these mitts for cold season running or warmer days cross-country skiing. They are windproof, water resistant and a great fit. I took medium, my usual size and can put a liner glove inside when I need a little extra warmth. It's great to be able to use technology (phone or car stereo) with these on.

Very breathable mitts

Used for Nordic skiing around Anchorage, these have proven noticeably more breathable than other mitts and gloves I use for that purpose. Unfortunately, they aren't particularly warm. For the temperatures that they are comfortable in, I prefer gloves. If you want a light, breathable mitten and don't need it to be too warm, these are probably for you. The touchscreen compatibility is surprisingly good for a mitten, and the pull-on loop works well.

Toasty hands

These mittens are perfect for running. My hands usually stay pretty cold for a while but these mittens help get warm quick and stay warm, without getting too sweaty inside.
