Why We Like The Black Diamond Distance 22L Backpack
The Black Diamond Distance 22L Backpack integrates elements of a running vest into a hybrid daypack that's appropriate for long-distance trail running, hiking, and scrambling. The vest-style harness holds the pack close to our body for less bounce when running and less bulk when scrambling, and it's stacked with a series of pockets that give us easy access to our soft flasks (sold separately), snacks, sunglasses, gels, and energy bars. We especially like the dedicated pockets for our Z-shaped trekking poles and attachment points for our piolets if we'll be mountaineering at high elevations. This 22-liter pack blurs the boundaries between running, hiking, and climbing packs, so we can enjoy whatever outdoor discipline that's currently calling our name.

Disappointing in comfort/fi versus the Distance 15
I have two older Distance 15 packs, which I have used for multiple years for desert and alpine hiking and scrambling. I tend to shred packs on the SW sandstone here, so I love the durability. The configuration of the front pockets is perfect. Last Dec I purchased a Distance 22 hoping to have a little more room for extra water and clothes for desert and alpine routes, respectively. It's not unusual to have to carry 132 oz of water during the summer, for example. Even though I have no issues with carrying similar weight with my Distance 15, the Distance 22 straps are uncomfortable with a loaded pack, and feel shorter than my comparably sized Distance 15. Also the front pocket configuration is awkward for a cell phone carry. It tends to rub against my armpit area unless I seat it carefully. Maybe it was designed for a flatter chested person. There is also a weird, impractically shallow open pocket on the each strap, which I would never use for fear of dropping things on the trail.

Ordered this pack for an
Ordered this pack for an early season 14er in Colorado and I’m beyond obsessed with it. Love the roll top for stuffing layers and warming gear in. Big enough to carry outer shell, insulation layer, plenty of water and food. Build quality is fantastic and will be trying out the beta light for a thru hike.

Zippered vest pocket could be
Zippered vest pocket could be slightly larger to more easily accommodate phones and this pack would benefit from a roll top and stretchy side pockets but with that being said it’s comfortable to run with and has minimal bounce when fully loaded.

Great backpack
This is a great backpack, with lots of thought put into it. I love the accessible pockets in the shoulder straps, the size is perfect for a day hike, the one of the trekking pole slots were stuffed with a SMART water bottle. A collapsible water bottle would fit better. The only downside side is that the should straps are not adjustable.
